🏞️ Uttarkashi – The Northern Kashi

Uttarkashi to Gangotri scenic mountain route

Uttarkashi, popularly known as Devbhoomi, is situated on the right bank of the Bhagirathi River.
Its ancient name, Barah (Barahat), reflects its deep historical roots. Often referred to as “Uttar ki Kashi”, Uttarkashi is primarily a religious city.

The two major Hindu pilgrimage sites—Gangotri and Yamunotri—are located within this district.

The region is blessed with lakes, waterfalls, snow-covered peaks, and lush valleys. On 24 February 1960, Uttarkashi was declared a separate district, after which the city developed rapidly due to administrative activities.
The Maneri-Bhali Project and the establishment of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering also played a major role in its growth.

It is recorded that the earthquake of 1803 caused significant damage to the city.
